Castle staircases – were they all built clockwise?

Well, it could be a fascinating quirk of medieval architecture, rooted in the practical need for defence during a time of frequent conflict, but is it true? And is it still true today?

The strategic design of castle staircases

Whilst you would expect the direction of a typical modern staircase to be designed for the aesthetics, in many early castles, the stairs are designed to spiral rising clockwise. This design choice was far from random with many historians believing it was a carefully thought-out feature meant to give castle defenders an advantage.

Why is that? Most people are right-handed, and the design of the staircase made it harder for attackers to defend themselves. When defending against an intruder coming up the stairs, the defender’s sword hand (the right hand, for most people) is free, allowing them to fight more efficiently. On the other hand, attackers coming up the stairs, moving in the opposite direction, had their sword hand restricted by the inner wall, making them at a distinct disadvantage. Wendy Turner-Hargreaves produced a fascinating article about this, and also asks the question on whether medieval staircases were designed to give right-handed defenders an advantage.

This design played a crucial role in making castle fortifications more effective, allowing the defenders to have a tactical advantage when the castle was under siege. However, some sources suggest that the design of spiral staircases, especially after the 1200’s were more influenced by practical architectural concerns rather than by military strategy.

So, do modern staircases follow the medieval trend?

We searched back nearly 15 years to find over 3000 (yes 3000!) staircases we have produced work for, and the split was almost exactly 50/50 across all the work (to be precise 50.49% Anti-Clockwise and 49.51% Clockwise!)

So, for most modern spiral or helical staircases, the direction is generally determined by the building’s layout and aesthetic preferences, with one direction being chosen over the other to provide better accessibility or to suit the flow of the space.
