Cold Rolling of Steel Beams at Angle Ring

Cold Rolling of Steel Beams

The Angle Ring Company have recently curved 20 tonnes of steelwork for the new Dudley Council Archive Services building which is located just 1.5 miles from its site in Tipton.

Before being taken to the local site for erection the steel wound its way on a 250 mile round trip via Cardiff for fabrication and galvanising by Hayes Engineering Services before returning in the September of 2012 for erection into the steel frame of the state of the art archive building which is located next to the Black Country Living Museum in Dudley.

The steelwork curved by Angle Ring is being used to give the building a majestic sweeping roof as part of the re-development of the Castle Hill area of Dudley which is being part funded by the European Regional Development Fund.

The move from the existing archives centre in Coseley to the new building is part of the council’s commitment to preserving and protecting the borough’s historic collections which date back to the 12th century and which have outgrown the existing site.

The new centre will be eco friendly and energy efficient, offering up to the minute facilities, including public wi-fi, a high tech document conservation studio, rare books library, well equipped search rooms and free car parking.

The main contractors, G F Tomlinson, pledged to use local sub-contractors where ever possible for carrying out various work packages.
To date 65% of the sub-contractors employed on the project fall within 25 miles radius of Dudley with Angle Ring and Structural Detailing (Midlands) Ltd both being within a few miles of the site.

Ian Shepherd of Angle Ring commented "Our work is generally well traveled with steelwork curved by Angle Ring being installed in many countries around the world from Australia to Azerbaijan however it is always satisfying to see the steel return locally, especially on an important project such as the archive facility. Having been in the Black Country for over 60 years we are proud of the local history and recently supported Sandwell Council with their 'local history day' based at Tipton Library".

For more information about Dudley and its history 'Black Country History' (http://blackcountryhistory.org/) is a searchable website which allows users to find information about documents, maps, photographs, art works, objects and more held by archives and museums services within the Black Country.
