Local Tipton Company, Angle Ring is celebrating its part in another prestigious contract, with the forming and bending of steel sections to be used in the new footbridge at Wembley Stadium

Angle Ring have specialised in steel bending for over 50 years, supplying curved steel for structural & engineering applications across Europe. Components have been supplied for many parts of the Wembley Project, which cannot be identified due to contractural obligations, but none were as challenging as the steel framework for the new footbridge.

The work involves several processes, including the forming of bespoke sections on their 1200tonne x 10metre press braking machine (one of the largest in the UK), a high quality sub-arc welding process, and then the induction (hot) bending of the sections to suit the unique curvature of the bridge, which snakes across the underground train lines below.

Paul Middleton, Marketing Manager at Angle Ring said “We are particularly proud to be working on the footbridge as it is a complex design, requiring processes & skills unique to our facility. We are lucky to have a workforce capable of handling jobs like this. Architects are designing more and more unusual structures which can be challenging. It offers great satisfaction when we help show that the skills required in manufacturing components are present in the UK”.

The induction bending process uses machinery designed & built by Tipton based Angle Ring, which has always been at the forefront of bending technology, developing many of the now industry standard techniques used worldwide.

Angle Ring have been involved in numerous prestigious projects across the UK & Europe, including many local steel bending projects from the West Bromwich Bus Station, Sandwell Academy, Tipton Sports Centre, the Heathtown Footbridge to the stylish Selfridges bridge at the Bull Ring.

The Wembley bridge which was recently named after Billy the White Horse is due to open next year.

Facts:

Angle Ring was founded in Bloomfield Road, Tipton in 1951 and currently employs over 100 staff.
Most of the machinery used is designed & built in house.
The White Horse Bridge was designed by Marks Barfield Architects, who were also responsible for the design of Millennium Wheel.
The bridge has been commissioned by the London Development Agency.
